SEATTLE — An 83-year-old Port Angeles man who was driving a minivan that was hit by a semi-truck last week remained in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center on Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Timothy K. Nobuhara was listed in critical condition after the Friday morning wreck on U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road east of Port Angeles.
He was upgraded to serious after having surgery at the Seattle hospital Saturday. He remained in serious condition in the intensive care unit Monday.
“He’s improving,” Harborview spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.
The State Patrol said Nobuhara was making a left turn from Monroe Road onto Highway 101 when his minivan was struck by a semi-truck and 53-foot trailer driven by Michael J.A. Wilson, 36, of Vancouver, Wash.
Troopers said Wilson was traveling eastbound on the highway and failed to stop at the red light before he struck the Toyota Sienna.
Irene Nobuhara, 84, a passenger in the minivan, was treated at Olympic Medical Center. She was listed in satisfactory condition Monday.
Both Nobuharas were transported by ambulance to OMC after the wreck. The driver was then airlifted to Harborview.
Clallam County Fire District No. 2 and Port Angeles Fire crews used hydraulic extrication tools to free the trapped driver, Clallam 2 Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Jake Patterson said.
Wilson was not injured.
Wilson was cited with negligent driving, the State Patrol said in a collision memo.
All three people involved in the wreck were wearing seat belts, troopers said. Drugs or alcohol were not involved.
The eastbound lanes of Highway 101 were blocked for about 90 minutes Friday, said Trooper Chelsea Hodgson, State Patrol spokeswoman.
