Port Angeles: No selective prosecution in robbery case, judge rules

PORT ANGELES — A Clallam County Superior Court judge has overruled claims of selective prosecution and prosecutorial vindictiveness in the case of a teenager charged as an adult in last fall’s armed robbery at Lincoln Park Grocery.

During a court hearing Thursday morning, Judge George L. Wood dismissed claims that Joseph J. Chartraw, 16, has been unfairly singled out for prosecution in adult court.

His two co-defendants in the case were charged in juvenile court.

Wood agreed to consider whether to grant a future hearing on two prior plea agreements that have been offered to Chartraw and retracted, and expressed concern about the case.

“I do want to say on the record that I’m troubled by this case,” the judge said. “I guess that’s as far as I’m going to take it.”

Chartraw’s trial was set to begin Monday and is now scheduled to start June 9 in Superior Court.

Chartraw, who now lives in Neah Bay, was charged in October in Superior Court with felony first-degree robbery in connection with the holdup of a convenience store earlier that month.
