PORT ANGELES — With the hum of patriotic music filling the air, hundreds of people gathered at City Pier Wednesday night to remember those who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and enjoy the final Concert on the Pier of the summer.
Some said they came to hear the Sequim City Band play patriotic tunes to celebrate America’s enduring spirit.
Others said they were escaping a day of television coverage of the attacks.
Still others who came just wanted to be with friends.
“We came out for a walk because we were worn out with the TV and the 9/11 stories,” said Willie Cunningham, 81, who lives in Port Angeles four months of the year with her husband, George. “We stumbled upon this and enjoy hearing the music.”
U.S. Navy World War II Armed Guard Veterans attending a conference at the Red Lion Hotel in Port Angeles said they heard the music and came out.
