A small plane that disappeared off Oregon on its way to Port Angeles was piloted by the co-founder of a company pursuing an ocean electricity-generating project off the coast of the Makah reservation.
Yury Avrutin of New York and an unidentified passenger were reportedly flying from McKinleyville, Calif., to Port Angeles on Tuesday afternoon.
Avrutin was planning to meet his sister in Port Angeles, according to Lt. Michelle Weiss from the Air Force Rescue Center in Langley, Va.
When Avrutin didn’t arrive as scheduled at 7 p.m. Tuesday, his sister reported him overdue, Weiss said.
Flight data indicated that the plane disappeared from radar screens in the area of Brookings, Ore., just north of the Oregon-California border.
Authorities did not identify Avrutin’s sister.
