PORT ANGELES — Jag, the Port Angeles police dog, has died.
Jag died of cancer Wednesday, Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith confirmed today.
“It’s very tragic, very sudden, due to illness,” he said in an email. “We are essentially in mourning right now. We have lost a very valued member of our department.”
Smith said more information would be made available later.
Jag, a 6-year-old Belgium malinois from Germany, joined the police department in 2009.
His partner on the K-9 team was Police Cpl. Kevin Miller.
Jag was wounded soon after he joined the force, cutting his mouth in May 2009 as he leaped over a barbed-wire fence chasing a suspect.
