PORT ANGELES — Port of Port Angeles Commissioner Len Beil suggested Monday studying the possible elimination of the Port’s deputy executive director position, currently held by Dave Hagiwara.
Beil’s suggestion was made as he and the two other Port commissioners, Glenn Beckman and Bill Hannan, talked about the Port’s activities to about 90 people at the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce’s last weekly luncheon meeting of 2002.
“There have been many questions as to whether or not this position provides for the most productive operations of the Port,” Beil said.
Beil wants a three-person “volunteer committee” to study whether the deputy director’s job, which pays about $100,000 annually in salary and benefits, is necessary.
The other two commissioners didn’t address Beil’s proposal during the meeting. Hagiwara could not be reached for comment.
But Monday night, Beckman, who chairs the Port commission, said in a telephone interview the idea had been suggested before — but that he considered it a “non-issue.”
