Port Angeles: Port commissioners react to Bullock pullout: “He had a lot to offer”

Claude Bullock’s withdrawal “didn’t surprise me,” said Jack Waud, president of the Port of Port Angeles board of commissioners.

“With all the negativity that has been in the air, it’s impossible to imagine how the man could have been effective as the Port director,” Waud said in an interview Sunday night from his home in Sequim.

“This man had a lot to offer the Port. He’s a good man.”

Both Waud and commissioner Leonard Beil talked with Bullock in separate meetings on Sunday. The third commissioner, Glenn Beckman, is on vacation, elk hunting in the Jackson Hole, Wyo., area.

The commissioners voted Aug. 24 to offer the Port executive director’s job to Bullock, with a start date of Oct. 1. But Bullock has been on vacation in Alaska, and no contract had been signed yet for the $90,000 a year position.

Beil said he had a “frank and very honest” 90-minute discussion with Bullock “about how I felt, and what I was hearing from my constituents.”
