PORT ANGELES — The first potential opposition to the proposed fluoridation of the city water supply arose Monday at the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce’s noon luncheon.
Pediatrician Dr. Steve Chapman, dental hygienist Cyndi Newman and dentist Todd Irwin said adding as little fluoride as 0.8 to 1.2 parts per million of fluoride to the city’s water supply would improve the dental health of adults and children, reduce emergency room trips for dental care and save on health insurance costs.
But Chiropractor Lee Jacobson countered that Billings, Mont., and Kodiak, Alaska, haven’t fluoridated their water, which shows many people still have concerns.
Chamber President Ray Gruver said the presentation was well-timed because the chamber’s board of directors will decide next week whether to endorse fluoridation.
The City Council also will hold a public hearing on the issue at its Feb. 18 meeting.
