TACOMA — Nine Port Angeles seniors ended their high school baseball careers Saturday at Heidelberg Park.
Eastlake eliminated the Roughriders 2-1 in the first round of the 16-team regional 4A playoffs.
“I’m going to miss these guys,” Port Angeles coach Randy Steinman said following the loss. “I wish we could have gone farther … because they’ve been so much fun and they’re an outstanding ball club.”
Eastlake was only a seventh-inning run better than the Riders.
With one out and runners at the corners, Ben Campbell scored the game-winner from third on a ground ball hit deep in the hole between first and second.
“Nothing you could do,” Steinman said. “We got the ground ball, it was just in the hole too much.”
Second baseman Nick Borchers was able to throw to second base for the force out but the toss to first for an attempted double play was late, sending Eastlake into the night game against South Kitsap.
South beat Edmonds-Woodway 2-1 to advance against Eastlake.
