PORT ANGELES — School Board member Charlie McClain defended district staff Tuesday after parents called for budget cuts to start “at the top.”
More than 150 people attended the meeting in the high school auditorium, 304 E. Park Ave.
Many asked why the district’s budget review committee did not suggest more administrative cuts in their 37 recommendations to trim spending.
The recommendations included closing a small elementary school, closing Choice High School and reducing extra-curricular academic and athletic activities.
The school district must cut $1 million from the current $34.4 million budget before the 2002-2003 fiscal year.
Last week, a group of Monroe Elementary School parents called on the district to close its Central Service Building, 216 E. Fourth St.
Some parents repeated the suggestion Tuesday.
