PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School District is seeking two student representatives to serve on the School Board during the 2016-17 school year.
“This is an opportunity for students interested in serving their community to do so,” Superintendent Marc Jackson said, “and at the same time, learn about public meetings, policy development and approval process, school district business and programs.”
“In particular,” Jackson added, “students interested in government and the work that often goes on behind the scenes, will be interested in this service. We meet twice a month throughout the year, so the commitment is often doable for a full-time student.”
The positions, one from Port Angeles High School and one from Lincoln High School, will serve as non-voting School Board members to provide student insight and perspective to directors and school district administrators and serve as a liaison to their respective student governments.
Student representatives also work with their high school leadership advisors and report to students about the work of the school district and the School Board.
Students must be juniors or seniors during their terms as student representatives and must be enrolled and attend the schools at least three periods per day.
They must be in academic standing equivalent to participation in athletics or other student activities and maintain this academic standing throughout their terms.
They are expected to maintain personal standards of behavior appropriate to participation in student activities.
And they must be willing to convey student opinion to the directors and report School Board deliberations and actions to student organizations.
Those who want to serve must complete applications, acquire approval signatures from their parents or guardians and school principals, and submit two reference letters — including one from a teacher or administrator at their schools.
Selected applicants will be interviewed by a district interview team, which will recommend student representatives to the School Board.
Applications are available on the district website at www.portangelesschools.org under “what’s new.”
Applications can be sent or delivered to Jennie Wilson, Port Angeles School District, Central Services Building, 216 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.
