PORT ANGELES — The School Board hopes the third time’s a charm for a property tax levy to buy new computers and software for Port Angeles school classrooms.
The board voted unanimously Monday night to put a four-year, $4.6 million technology levy before voters in the Nov. 4 election.
The all-mail election will also pick the next president, elect or re-elect a governor and decide numerous other offices and issues.
The newest technology levy request is reduced from a May attempt that failed to reach the 50 percent passage requirement with only a 45.73 percent yes vote.
A tech levy attempt also failed in 2005 under old rules that required such levies to reach 60 percent to pass.
The newest levy, if passed, would start at a rate of 32 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation — about 30 percent less than the May request.
The 32-cents rate means the owner of a $200,000 home would pay about $64 additional per year.
“The last time it didn’t pass by only about 5 percent, so to me that says we need to get out there and educate people more,” board president Cindy Kelly said Monday night.
“We need to let them know what our kids are doing or not being able to do.”
