PORT ANGELES — The state Department of Transportation might buy the 23 waterfront acres needed for a graving yard.
The Port of Port Angeles and Transportation officials are now talking about purchase instead of a long-term lease on the property for the huge on-shore dry dock that would be used to build new pontoons and concrete anchors for the Hood Canal Bridge.
Randy Hain, Olympic Region administrator for the state agency, confirmed Monday that purchase of the site is “one of the options we’ve agreed with the Port to pursue.”
Hain said the reason for the change in the Port’s negotiating stance was a consultant’s study of alternative uses for the graving yard.
