PORT ANGELES — Two Port Angeles High School student groups presented checks totaling $3,500 to Captain Joseph House Foundation founder Betsy Reed Schultz on Tuesday morning.

The school’s combined choirs, led by director Jolene Dalton Gailey, earned $2,500 during an April concert held to raise money for the Captain Joseph House at 1108 S. Oak St., Port Angeles.

The Port Angeles Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, led by Capt. Jonathan Picker, assisted at the concert, then conducted its own penny drive and raised an additional $1,000 for the foundation.

The foundation and a team of volunteers are renovating the building that once housed Schultz’s bed-and-breakfast, The Tudor Inn.

The Captain Joseph House is conceived as a first-of-its-kind-in-the-nation facility that will provide expense-paid respite for families of those killed in military action.

Schultz named the project after her son, Army Capt. Joseph Schultz, who was killed in Afghanistan on May 29, 2011.

“This [donation] represents to me that in this community, all generations support the project,” Betsy Schultz said.

“It is a testimony to our students that it is important to them, what our military families go through,” Schultz said.

Checks, payable to the Captain Joseph House Foundation, may be sent in care of Gailey to Port Angeles High School, 304 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

The Captain Joseph House Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so all donations are tax-deductible.
