Port Angeles teacher awarded $1,000 grant

PORT ANGELES — Staci Poythress and Stevens Middle School have been awarded a $1,000 grant through the got milk? Campaign and Fuel Up to Play 60 as part of the Breakfast Blitz program.

Poythress teaches physical education at Stevens.

A total of $250,000 in grants nationwide was awarded to support school breakfast programs.

Breakfast matters

In a letter to awardees, a got milk? Campaign and Fuel Up to Play 60 representative said: “We know that children eating breakfast truly matters. Research shows that improved nutrition, daily breakfast and increased physical activity can lead to improved academic performance.”

Stevens placed in the top 250 schools nationwide to receive the grant.

The grant was sponsored by milk processors who support the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, which was founded by the National Dairy Council and the National Football League, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Besides Stevens, eight other Washington schools received the grant. They are in Zillah, Richland, Olympia, Lacey, Anacortes, Washougal, Kent and East Wenatchee.
