PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School teacher Mark Valentine has been selected to be a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Scholar.
He will attend a five-week seminar, “The Political Theory of Hannah Arendt: The Problem of Evil and the Origins of Totalitarianism,” at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
The 16 teachers selected to participate in the program each receive a stipend of $3,900 to cover their travel, study and living expenses.
The program Valentine will attend is one of 22 seminars and institutes supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
It is directed by Dr. Kathleen Jones, professor emeritus of women’s studies and political science, San Diego State University.
The National Endowment for the Humanities supports enrichment opportunities at colleges, universities and cultural institutions so that teachers can study with experts in humanities disciplines.
The approximately 460 summer scholars who participate will teach almost 57,500 American students the following year.
