Port Angeles: Waterfront event offers spectators view of spills and chills on the water

PORT ANGELES –Dwarfed by mighty tankers, a flurry of racers push their one-man power skis to the limits.

Roostertails leave rippled traces of the racers’ paths in the water behind them.

The Bill Koenig Jettin’ the Strait personal watercraft races return to Port Angeles Harbor on Saturday for the third annual action-packed weekend of power ski racing.

Events start at 10 a.m. Saturday when endurance racers go head-to-head for a shot at $5,000 in prize money.

The endurance race will take riders on a winding 35-mile course to the edge of the harbor and back.

Races are expected to end by 4 p.m. Trophies will be awarded shortly thereafter.

Competition continues at 9 a.m. Sunday when competitors test their maneuvering skills on the winding 5-minute closed course.

The races will take place off Hollywood Beach near City Pier, making the pier and waterfront trail prime viewing areas.
