Port Angeles: Westport celebrates beginning of new yacht plant

PORT ANGELES — With a near-perfect spring day as a backdrop and construction work already humming along, business and community leaders joined Westport Shipyard Inc. officials to celebrate construction of the company’s new luxury yacht plant.

The $13 million, 600,000-square-foot plant on the Port of Port Angeles industrial waterfront will eventually employ 200.

Westport officials said they will be producing the world’s largest “production” yacht, a $30 million, 164-foot luxury model.

Company officials on hand for the ground-breaking event were Westport Vice President Larry Nelson, new Westport Port Angeles plant manager Lee Taubeneck and Westport principal owner Orin Edson.

“There are a lot of mayors across the state that would like to be part of this event and be welcoming such a great company,” Port Angeles Mayor Glenn Wiggins told the gathering of economic development promoters, community leaders and politicians, including U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Bremerton.
