PORT ANGELES — Attorney and Judge Brian Paul Coughenour takes law where no legal mind has gone before — into the ethical and moral conflicts of Captain Kirk, Mister Spock and their counterparts.
Using “Star Trek” episodes dating to the television show’s 1966 pilot, Coughenour draws on characters’ attitudes and dilemmas to teach current legal issues in legal education seminars.
He says he has even used portions of the closing argument from the episode “Court Martial” in a state Court of Appeals Division II case.
“Star Trek” is something everyone understands, Coughenour says.
