Port Angeles woman in critical condition at Seattle hospital following wreck

LAKE SUTHERLAND — Jennifer J. Hathaway of Port Angeles was listed in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center on Thursday after a Wednesday night wreck on U.S. Highway 101 near Lake Sutherland Road.

State Patrol troopers said Hathaway, 40, fell asleep at the wheel of a 1985 Honda Civic, crossed the centerline and collided with a 2005 Toyota Matrix driven by David S. Worrall, 71, of Kelowna, B.C., in the westbound lane at 10:46 p.m.

Hathaway was airlifted to the Seattle hospital with leg, hip and chest injuries.

Worrall was not injured.

Harborview spokeswoman Leila Gray said Hathaway was listed in critical condition as of 3:30 p.m.

Troopers closed the roadway for three hours and 40 minutes to conduct the investigation. The wreck occurred about 11 miles west of Port Angeles near Milepost 233, the State Patrol said.

Both vehicles came to a rest in the eastbound shoulder, according to troopers.

The State Patrol said Hathaway would be cited for second-degree negligent driving.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, the State Patrol said.

Drugs or alcohol were not involved, troopers said.

A 65-foot-long historic tug rests in the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven Marina’s 300-ton marine lift as workers use pressure washers to blast years of barnacles and other marine life off the hull. The tug was built for the U.S. Army at Peterson SB in Tacoma in 1944. Originally designated TP-133, it is currently named Island Champion after going through several owners since the army sold it in 1947. It is now owned by Debbie Wright of Everett, who uses it as a liveaboard.
