PORT ANGELES — Construction of the new baggage screening area at William R. Fairchild International Airport could begin within two weeks, Airport Manager Jeff Robb told Port of Port Angeles commissioners.
The Boeing Co. is in charge of the baggage screening aspect of the new airport security system.
Airports are being required by the federal government to screen all baggage by Dec. 31.
Robb has met with Boeing Co. officials and contractors to develop a rough plan for installing the baggage screening machine.
The baggage screening machine will be a different and much smaller device than those used at larger airports, Robb said.
It also will be hard-wired to preclude recent incidents where metal detectors were found unplugged, he said.
