PORT ANGELES — City employees could be allowed to volunteer in Port Angeles schools for up to one hour per week under a proposal endorsed by the City Council during its Saturday retreat.
City Manager Michael Quinn, who couldn’t attend the retreat, proposed the idea in a memo to the council.
“This program can be worked on as a part of increased volunteer service,” Quinn wrote. “It may have to be limited in order to assure city work gets done, but I think such volunteerism is good for the community and the employee’s contribution to it.”
City workers who volunteer, subject to a criminal background check, could spend an hour a week reading to and with children under the proposal.
The program allows children to proceed at their own pace, compiling points for books they’ve read and progressing to higher and higher levels of reading.
