Port Hadlock man homeless after early morning fire

PORT HADLOCK — A Port Hadlock man was left homeless after an early Thursday morning fire destroyed his home in the 3700 block of Oak Bay Road.

There were no injuries, according to a news release from East Jefferson Fire Rescue (EJFR).

The victim’s name was not readily available.

EJFR was toned to the fire at 5:08 a.m. after the man returned from a quick trip to the grocery store and found his home fully engulfed in flames. He then called 9-1-1 from his mobile phone.

EJFR firefighters were joined by crews from Naval Magazine Indian Island, Port Ludlow Fire and Rescue and Quilcene Fire Rescue in fighting the fire in the wood frame structure and adjacent shed, which also caught fire.

No fire hydrants were located nearby, so water was supplied by a series of fire department water tenders, according to the news release.

EJFR Fire Chief Jim Walkowski said the fire was knocked down by 5:38 a.m. However, because of limited water supply and the availability of flammable items in both the house and shed, the fire was not declared out until 7:38 a.m.

The owner of the house said that it was insured and refused the offer of short-term housing through the American Red Cross, stating that he planned to temporarily stay with relatives in the area.

Members of the Jefferson County Fire Investigation Task Force were looking into the cause of the fire.
