Port Ludlow Fire Board nominees sought to fill vacancy

PORT LUDLOW— Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue is seeking to replace Commissioner David Wheeler, who resigned this month with two years left on an unexpired term.

Wheeler was serving his second six-year term and resigned for family reasons.

Anyone interested in serving as commissioner for Jefferson County Fire District No. 3, as the Port Ludlow department is formally called, is asked to submit a letter of interest that lists any past public service and professional work experience to the district office.

The letters should be sent to 7650 Oak Bay Road no later than Sept. 12.

The letters will be reviewed at the board meeting scheduled for Sept. 13, after which time the board will schedule applicant interviews.

Residency in the fire district is required.

A background in emergency services is not a prerequisite to serve as fire commissioner. The district is looking for people with a desire to serve the community by working together with an elected body to oversee policy matters and district finances, according to a news release from the agency.

Board chair Gene Carmody said people without an emergency service background will be valuable in this position because

they will provide a

different perspective.

Once the interview process is complete, the new commissioner will be selected by the remaining four commissioners: Carmody, Robert Pontius, Bill Hanson and Ron Helmonds.

Hanson’s term expires this year, and he is not running for re-election.

Candidates for his seat are James Betteley and Raelene Rossart.

All interview sessions for the new commissioner will be open to the public, Carmody said.

For more information, phone Carmody at 360-437-4024 or 360-301-3022.
