PORT LUDLOW — A plan to deepen Mats Mats Quarry to 60 feet below sea level has area residents concerned about possible environmental impacts.
Nearly 50 people turned out Thursday night to listen to input on Glacier Northwest’s plan to deepen a quarry at its 110-acre operation in Port Ludlow.
Officials recorded questions and concerns raised during the session.
Residents voiced concern that deepening the gravel pit will lead to water seepage, saltwater intrusion and increasing noise and traffic.
Fifteen people who spoke at the hearing at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds voiced concern over the draft state Department of Natural Resources environmental impact statement on the planned gravel pit deepening released by the in January.
The environmental statement said deepening the quarry will not create significant environmental problems.
