Port Ludlow Village Council to weigh idea for temporary ferry landing

PORT LUDLOW — The Village Council is expected to discuss and possibly act this month on a proposal to run a passenger ferry from Port Ludlow Marina to Kingston during the May-June 2009 Hood Canal Bridge closure.

It is an option supported by the Port Townsend and Port Angeles chambers of commerce to provide transportation to the North Olympic Peninsula when the bridge is closed for an expected six weeks to replace its east half.

Lynn Gauche, Port Ludlow Village Council president, said she supported the Ludlow-Kingston proposal after Port Townsend chamber General Manager Tim Caldwell brought the matter before the council Thursday afternoon at the Beach Club.

“Port Ludlow to Kingston is a better idea because you can easily go into Seattle or take a bus to other parts of Kitsap County,” said Caldwell, a Port Ludlow resident.

He urged the council to support the Port Ludlow-Kingston passenger-ferry option during the bridge closure.

He also urged council members and Port Ludlow residents to complete the survey, which runs today until midnight, on the Hood Canal Bridge project’s Web site at www.hoodcanalbridge.org.

More than 3,000 responses have been registered on the site, which asks what respondents which of the two routes they prefer.

“We know that there will be a disruption to the tranquillity we enjoy here, but given the options, this option would certainly make it easier,” Caldwell said.

A 65-foot-long historic tug rests in the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven Marina’s 300-ton marine lift as workers use pressure washers to blast years of barnacles and other marine life off the hull. The tug was built for the U.S. Army at Peterson SB in Tacoma in 1944. Originally designated TP-133, it is currently named Island Champion after going through several owners since the army sold it in 1947. It is now owned by Debbie Wright of Everett, who uses it as a liveaboard. The all-wood tug is the last of its kind and could possibly be entered in the 2025 Wooden Boat Festival.(Steve Mullensky/for Peninsula Daily News)
