PORT TOWNSEND — Incumbent Port of Port Townsend Commissioner Steve Tucker has raised twice the campaign funds of his opponent, Diana Talley — half of which came out of his own pocket.

Tucker — the former owner of Auto Works, which he sold — has raised $9,439 and poured $5,247 of his own money into his campaign, he said Friday.

His largest single contributor is Puget Sound Express, which contributed $950 and is owned by fellow Port Commissioner Pete Hanke.

Talley, a shipwright and owner of Taku Marine at the Boat Haven, has raised $4,999 — just $1 short of being required to report her contributions and expenditures to the Public Disclosure Commission.

Talley must keep records of her contributions and make them available for inspection but would not disclose contributors in a recent telephone interview.

Her largest single contribution was $499, also one dollar under the limit for a single contribution.

“I’ve got a lot of little stuff and a couple of big ones, but I’m not over the limit,” she said.

“I did not necessarily want to put that out in public.

“I have nothing to hide, but that’s the rules.”

She also wanted to avoid the hassle of sending reports to the PDC, she added.

Tucker, who reported 30 individual contributions, said if he had to do it over again, he would have loaned money to his campaign rather than simply spent his own funds.

His largest single expenditure was $3,600 for printing and mailing a mailer.

Talley said she spent most of her contributions on advertising and “slim jim” fliers.

Her campaign committee is “Tippecanoe and Talley Too.”

“It was a catchy phrase,” she said.

“I just couldn’t go with ‘Elect Diana Talley.’

“It was just too boring.”

A 65-foot-long historic tug rests in the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven Marina’s 300-ton marine lift as workers use pressure washers to blast years of barnacles and other marine life off the hull. The tug was built for the U.S. Army at Peterson SB in Tacoma in 1944. Originally designated TP-133, it is currently named Island Champion after going through several owners since the army sold it in 1947. It is now owned by Debbie Wright of Everett, who uses it as a liveaboard.
