PORT TOWNSEND — Assistant Fire Chief Tom Aumock and his wife were awakened by fire in their home early Sunday morning.
“I didn’t have much clothes on, so I put my fire gear on and went to work fighting the fire,” he said.
Aumock and his wife, Traci, were sleeping in their bedroom just after midnight when they heard an explosion at the opposite end of the house at 2303 Hendricks St.
Aumock said he was only partially awakened by the noise, but his wife told him to go check it out.
“I thought it was just the circuit-breaker tripping,” he said.
Heat and smoke pushed him inside as he tried to step out the back door onto a porch.
“I came back and told my wife, ‘We’re on fire, we’ve got to get out,”‘ he said Monday.
