PORT TOWNSEND — The last time the Port Townsend-based Coast Guard cutter Osprey got a new commander, the nation was still grieving from the 9/11 terrorist attacks two weeks earlier.
On Thursday, during a short ceremony followed by a prayer, Senior Chief Boatswain’s Mate Dale C. Steinmetz assumed the command at a midday ceremony at Point Hudson.
Steinmetz relieves Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate Fred L. Bowman, who had taken command on Sept. 29, 2001.
Bowman is relinquishing the Osprey helm to become officer in charge of the Coast Guard’s Motor Lifeboat Station Hatteras Inlet in North Carolina.
