PORT TOWNSEND — A 76-year-old Port Townsend man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries after he was struck by a trailer’s load while riding his bike Monday.
Stanley L. Cummings was riding his bicycle with his helmet on shortly before 11 a.m. in the eastbound lane on the shoulder of state Highway 20 just west of Old Fort Townsend Road when he was struck by part of a tractor that was towed on a trailer.
Cummings was in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit as of 5 p.m. Tuesday at Harborview, said Susan Gregg, hospital spokesperson.
Gregory C. Lechtenberg, 81, of Chimacum also was traveling eastbound on Highway 20 while driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck and towing a flatbed trailer, when a part of a tractor he was towing struck Cummings as Lechtenberg passed the bicyclist, State Trooper Chelsea Hodgson said.
The eastbound lane was closed for about 45 minutes Monday, Hodgson said.
No alcohol or drugs were involved with the collision, according to a State Patrol report.
The cause was still under investigation Tuesday, Hodgson said.
