PORT TOWNSEND — Every year, Blue Heron Middle School teachers bring the eighth-grade to Jefferson County Courthouse to observe local government.
This year, one student just wanted to sit on the bench.
“I want to be a judge when I grow up,” said Sam Little, who immigrated to the United States four years ago. “I want to make the city safer for everyone and help people so they won’t make mistakes.”
Little was one of 125 eighth-graders visiting the courthouse Friday for Government Day, an annual event giving students a close-up look at the people who carry out the day-to-day operation of the government system they have read about in books.
