PORT TOWNSEND — Although the Hood Canal Bridge closure is more than four years away, local business owners and tourism officials are concerned now that tourism will be adversely affected.
Nearly 50 people who showed up at a Thursday meeting in Port Townsend told state Department of Transportation officials that a plan needs to be developed to help prevent a decline in tourism when part of the bridge is replaced during the summer of 2006.
Last month, a key regional transportation authority approved a plan that calls for foot-traffic ferries between South Point and Port Gamble.
The plan does not include vehicle ferries from Port Townsend to Edmonds or Kingston during the six-week bridge closure.
