PORT TOWNSEND — Come the New Year, Fort Worden will be the only major state park in Washington that doesn’t charge parking fees.
The Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce has paid the state $2,000 to keep free parking at the fort through Jan. 31.
But to avoid fees year-round, $23,000 more must be raised, chamber General Manager Tim Caldwell said Monday.
Community businesses and residents will be asked to cover those costs in a fund-raising campaign to be launched next month, he said.
“We feel the economic benefit of Fort Worden is well worth the community covering the parking costs for 2003,” he said.
