PORT TOWNSEND — A split City Council voted Monday against endorsing Initiative 790, a statewide measure that would revise the structure for police and firefighters’ retirement pensions — and the city big bucks, council members said.
The council voted 3-2 against the referendum, which is being sponsored by police and firefighters unions and would create an 11-member pension board with a majority of police and firefighter representatives.
Monday’s council vote was as much about whether the council should be taking sides on statewide initiatives at all.
The two dissenting votes — by Councilmen Geoff Masci and Al Youse — came from the fact that they think the council was out of bounds.
