PORT TOWNSEND — A California-based company that teased several Northwest cities, including Port Angeles, with the possibility of being home to a shipbuilding operation featuring family-wage jobs is now considering Port Townsend.
Larry Crockett, executive director for the Port of Port Townsend, confirmed this week that Port Townsend is one of three locations being considered by Santa Maria Shipping LLC, of Santa Rosa.
The other possible sites aren’t known and company officials were unavailable to comment Friday.
The interest in Port Townsend, and the two other locations, came as a surprise because Santa Maria officials seemed close to choosing Olympia as the place where it would build 300-foot-long container ships, mainly for commercial usage.
