PORT TOWNSEND — History was made this week, but few people noticed.
The City Council and the Jefferson County Public Utility District Commission decided Monday to trade the Tri-Area Water system for the Glen Cove system.
No one commented on the historic transaction during a public hearing held before both governing bodies voted in favor of the deal.
The utility more than doubles its customer base in acquiring the Tri-Area lines, picking up 1,700 customers. The city gets the Glen Cove system and its 180 mostly commercial customers.
The utility district will also pay Port Townsend $2.2 million and assume $1.3 million in debt obligation.
