KALA POINT — When Karl Bach moved to Port Townsend three years ago, he had never written a note of music.
Today, he has five marches to his name, including the “Port Townsend March,” and has written two new pieces — “The Red Hat Triptych,” and “My Help Is In the Mountains” that will premiere this spring. For inspiration, he draws on the heritage, history and people of his adopted hometown.
“This town is so rich in people and talent,” Bach says. “It’s phenomenal.”
Bach, 69, plays the kettle drums in the Port Townsend Community Orchestra and conducts the Port Townsend Summer Band, which entertains picnikers and strollers at Chetzemoka Park in the summer. But for 20 years, he played for presidents and heads of state as a percussionist in the U.S. Navy Band.
