PORT TOWNSEND — City Councilwoman Freida Fenn won’t be taking a resolution opposing nuclear weapons with her to Japan when she visits Hiroshima and Ichikawa later this month.
Fenn failed to garner enough support from her colleagues for the resolution during Monday night’s council meeting.
In fact, the matter didn’t even get to a vote.
Council members Catharine Robinson, Geoff Masci and Joe Finnie — enough to defeat the measure with Councilman Al Youse absent — opposed the document, saying it either fell outside the purview of City Council or that they are philosophically opposed to the document.
Although Robinson said she supports nuclear disarmament, she opposed the measure because it is outside her duties on the council.
Finnie said he opposed the resolution for “philosophic and pragmatic” reasons.
When it became apparent the measure would fail, Fenn withdrew her proposal.
