PORT TOWNSEND — Smoky? Sparky? Torch?
These are just a few of the entries in a contest to find a name for Officer Bob Wire’s newest canine companion, a papier-mache pound puppy that will accompany him on traffic duty.
“He needed a friend for those lonely nights,” said Jean Marzan.
Marzan is the creator of Officer Bob Wire, Port Townsend’s faux police officer, who sat in a surplus patrol car on neighborhood streets 24/7 to discourage speeders.
Made of chicken wire with papier-mache head, Bob was popular with locals and tourists, many of whom stopped and took his picture.
He was working late one winter night on a lonely road when vandals torched his car.
He barely escaped in one piece.
