PORT TOWNSEND — “It’s the economy, stupid.”
That remark from the Rev. William Maxwell drew laughs, but it stated the concern of many who attended the second annual Port Townsend Town Meeting on Wednesday night.
The meeting at Blue Heron Middle School attracted about 125 people interested in discussing developing a strong, diverse economy that provides jobs.
Participants divided into small groups and asked to discuss how Port Townsend could be a better community for everyone.
A stronger economy with an emphasis on small business and light industry topped the groups’ wish lists.
“We miss the vibrancy of working people in our community,” resident Lloyd Cahoon said. “We’re losing that mid-group of working people.”
