Kazakstan awaits former Port Townsend newspaper reporter Miranda Bryant’s return, but the Peace Corps hasn’t decided whether she’ll go back.
The terrorist attacks Sept. 11 against the Pentagon and World Trade Center have introduced a new concern for Americans being so close –just 200 miles — to Afghanistan.
Bryant, a former reporter for the weekly Leader newspaper, has been in the Muslim country for the past 16 months but returned to America on Sept. 21 on a scheduled vacation.
She has spent the past 1½ weeks visiting relatives in Minneapolis. She arrives in Tacoma today to visit her boyfriend.
“I don’t have any intention of quitting, but some volunteers I know have (quit) because of pressure from their families back home,” Bryant said in a phone interview Monday.
“We are welcome there (in Kazakstan) or we wouldn’t be there.”
