PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend is searching for a new fire chief following Ed Edwards’ resignation Monday.
The resignation, which will be effective in April, wasn’t a surprise, City Manager David Timmons said.
“What was unexpected was that he stayed this long,” Timmons said.
Edwards was hired as an interim chief in 2000 to serve while the city searched for a person to take the position full time.
He never intended the position to become permanent — he had retired from the Seattle Fire Department just two years earlier.
The City employees Edwards on a part-time basis for $40,000 a year, Timmons said.
The new full-time chief will earn around $70,000 a year, according to Timmons.
