PORT TOWNSEND — The City Council on Monday night voted to ban fireworks in Port Townsend — but not before the coming Fourth of July.
The council voted 6-1 to prohibit sale and use of fireworks anywhere inside the city limit.
The ban will take effect in December — not a year after the passage of the ordinance as was previously discussed by the council –because of a recent change in state law.
Citizens would still be allowed to store fireworks in their houses or elsewhere in the city.
“I think this is a no-brainer,” Councilwoman Michelle Sandoval said. “You don’t want children to get hurt or start fires.”
Councilwoman Freida Fenn cast the only “no” vote.
