PORT TOWNSEND — Fund raising for the City Hall restoration got a major boost with the announcement Monday of a $280,000 federal grant.
The money, part of the National Park Service Save America’s Treasures program, will help restore the exterior brick of the 112-year-old building.
President Bush set aside $15 million in March for the program. First lady Laura Bush announced the recipients Monday in a speech in Portland, Maine.
Shortly afterward, a small ceremony was held at City Hall, 540 Water St., to announce the local grant.
Of 452 applicants, only 63 were awarded grants.
Port Townsend’s City Hall is the only structure in Washington state to be awarded money this year, said Bill Tennent, Jefferson County Historical Society executive director.
