Port Townsend: Forums due on City Hall annex proposal

PORT TOWNSEND — Residents will soon get to tell municipal politicians what they think about a proposed City Hall annex.

Council members voted unanimously Monday night to implement a 90-day public information program designed to tell residents about the project, which could be as large as 14,000 square feet and cost as much as $3.4 million.

Council members will consult with the public during open houses in other, less formal meeting environments in accordance with the decision.

The vote came before a crowd of 45 people who packed the meeting to voice their opinions on the annex.

One of the speakers, former councilman Vern Garrison, showed the council a petition containing about 400 signatures of residents opposed to the annex.

After hearing the crowd, Councilman Geoff Masci suggested the council host open meetings and forums on the annex.

“Let people speak about it, look at it and decide on it,” Masci said, moving for a vote on the measure.

Councilman Joe Finnie made several friendly ammendments to Masci’s motion.

Mayor Kees Kolff and council members Catharine Robinson, Alan Youse, Finnie and Masci supported the motion.

Councilwomen Freida Fenn and Michelle Sandoval were absent from the meeting.
