PORT TOWNSEND — Six Port Townsend High School students qualified for the National Future Business Leaders of America Conference in Anaheim, Calif., after placing recently at the state FBLA contest in Spokane.
Sixteen Port Townsend students competed in a variety of business contests, ranging from online objective tests to speaking and performance competitions to yearlong projects.
Kaila Olin and Megan Walsh were first in desktop publishing, the second straight year a PTHS duo has won the event and advanced to the national competition set from June 27 through June 30.
Kaila was third in electronic career portfolio and will compete in that event at nationals.
Emma Kelety was second in public speaking II.
Emma, Erika Hoglund and Molly McGuire finished second as a team in the business plan category.
The trio designed the restaurant that will go in the old Surf Restaurant in the Hastings Building downtown.
Heather Dudley Nolette, a Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce member and manager of the Hastings Estate, was their mentor and provided expertise to guide the students’ business plan.
Madison Pruitt and Kaila were third in the “partnership with a business” category.
Madison’s partnership project established seven internships for PTHS students to use as senior projects.
She worked with Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce Vice President Amanda Funaro.
Madison will present at the chamber meeting the first Monday in June.
