Port Townsend girl hurt in wreck

PORT HADLOCK — A 16-year-old Port Townsend girl was injured following a two-car wrecked that trapped her for a time under the Jeep she was driving after it tipped over on state Highway 19 about 6 miles south of Port Townsend, according to emergency officials.

Aija Railyn Thomas was taken to Jefferson Healthcare hospital after the Jeep she was driving collided with a Ford Focus that had pulled out in front of her on state Highway 19 at the intersection with Irondale Road at 6:109 p.m. Tuesday, the State Patrol said.

A Jefferson Healthcare hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday morning that no one with the girl’s name was listed on the hospital’s patient roster.

Bill Beezley, spokesman for East Jefferson Fire Rescue, said the Jeep rolled after the wreck and trapped the girl’s leg underneath the vehicle’s roll bar.

Passersby helped lift the Jeep off her, he said.

According to State Patrol accounts, Thomas was headed north on Highway 19 in a 1985 Jeep CJ 7 with Jacob P. Kinny, 16, of Chimacum, as a passenger.

As the Jeep approached the intersection with Irondale Road, Laverne R. Hicks, 83, of Port Hadlock, was headed west on Irondale Road in a 2006 Ford Focus sedan and pulled out in front of the Jeep to turn left onto the highway, the State Patrol said.

The Jeep struck the Focus, the State Patrol said, causing the Jeep to tip over on its driver’s side.

Kinny, Hicks and Hicks’ 86-year-old passenger, Kathrine E. Olsen, of Chimacum, were not injured, the State Patrol said.

The State Patrol listed the cause of the wreck as Hicks failing to yield.

All were wearing seat belts, the State Patrol said.
