Port Townsend: “Groundhog Day”” grounded by rain, but theater manager will try outdoor movie again

PORT TOWNSEND — If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

That’s the message of the movie, “Groundhog Day,” and that’s what Rose Theater manager Rocky Friedman plans to do.

“We’re going to try it once more,” Friedman said. “If we can’t do it next week, it’s off for this year.”

For the past six years, the Rose has sponsored an outdoor movie for local families.

Held at Memorial Field downtown, the event draws hundreds of people who bring blankets, chairs, tables and even sofas, and sit or lie out under the stars.

But heavy rain during the day Saturday canceled the screening of this year’s movie, “Groundhog Day.”

“Everything was still wet,” Friedman said.

“It would have been extremely damp and unpleasant.”

It was the first time the Rose’s outdoor movie has been canceled for weather, Friedman said.
