PORT TOWNSEND — Ray Brown, a legendary jazz bassist who died Tuesday, was slated to perform in Centrum’s Jazz Port Townsend festival later this month.
Brown, 75, who played with giants Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson and his one-time wife, Ella Fitzgerald, in a career that spanned more than a half-century, was scheduled to perform in Port Townsend on July 27 with the Ray Brown Trio.
“He was as legendary as they get, so to replace him at this late point is going to be certainly a challenge,” Centrum Director of Marketing Keven Elliff said Wednesday.
Elliff said he is confident festival organizers will find an act people will like to replace Brown’s appearance at the annual three-day festival.
