PORT HADLOCK — The resignation last month of Jefferson County Library Director Bill Mitchell and the election of four new City Council members render moot the results of a recently completed $5,455 library annexation study.
Patience Rogge, County Library Board Annexation Committee Chairwoman, said Wednesday that until city officials request the Port Townsend library be annexed, the study will be placed on a back shelf.
“With our not having a director and they’re having a practically new City Council, we’re in a holding pattern,” Rogge said.
The annexation study, completed Dec. 12 and reviewed by the Jefferson County Library Board a week ago, outlines the pros and cons of the county library district’s look at incorporating the library.
“The big question is fiscal. There’s a gap between the money the district would get from Port Townsend and what it cost to run that library,” Rogge said.
“Because the current council can’t bind future councils to make up that difference, that’s the largest negative to annexation.”
